Prof. Dr. John Hess

Professorship

Paediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Defects
Professor emeritus since October 1, 2012

Academic Career and Research Areas

Professor Hess conducts research in the field of congenital heart disease, both in children and adults. His particular interest lies in the development and implementation of new (functional) imaging techniques (ultrasound, cardioMR, angiography) and of interventional catheter treatment techniques, and in the field of molecular cardiology. Key research areas are the genetic substrate of congenital heart defects and the remodeling of pulmonary vessels. A major focus of this research is the quantification of quality of life in the long term following treatment of congenital heart defects.

Professor Hess (b. 1946) studied at the University of Groningen/Netherlands, where he also acquired his postdoctoral teaching qualification in 1982. In 1977 he obtained his medical board certification in pediatrics and in 1979 in pediatric cardiology. He was a research fellow in San Francisco (UCSF, 1979) and at Duke University (1981) as well as a professor of pediatric cardiology at Erasmus University Rotterdam (1987). Since 1997 he has been a professor at TUM. Professor Hess is also a member of several professional associations.
