Prof. Dr. Bernd-Robert Höhn

Professorship

Machine Elements
Professor emeritus since October 1, 2011

Academic Career and Research Areas

Professor Höhn carries out research in the area of mechanical powertrain engineering with the main emphasis on transmissions and gears. For the purpose of international standardization he develops computation procedures for all types of gear teeth and determines the permissible component strength values. Within DFG Collaborative Research Centre 365 a vehicle with a hybrid drive system was built and tested under his leadership with the aim of reducing fuel consumption. The central theme of all his research activities is the reduction of the losses that occur in all the components of a transmission system.

After studying mechanical engineering at TH Darmstadt, Professor Höhn completed his doctorate in the Department for Machine Elements and Transmissions of the same university. He continued his career in industry where he developed the application of continuously variable transmissions in cars while working in the Transmission Development Department at Audi. In 1989 he accepted a position in the Machine Elements Department at TUM. From 2003 to 2009 he was a member of the VDI Steering Committee and headed the scientific advisory board. He received the Ernst Blickle prize in 2006 for "his outstanding, pioneering services in the field of transmission engineering." Professor Höhn has been a member of Acatech, the German Academy of Science and Engineering, since 2006.
