Career

After passing the first and second state law examinations and obtaining his doctorate from the Law Faculty at the University of Marburg/Lahn, Professor Markwardt started to work as a prosecuting attorney for the state of Bavaria in 1973. Later he was a judge and senior government official in the Bavarian Department of Justice. Between 1977 and 1981 he was a member of the academic staff at the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. In 1981 he accepted a teaching assignment at the Bavarian Civil Service University. Since 1983 he has been an examiner of the first and second state law examinations. Following positions as a judge at the Higher Regional Court in Munich and section head in the Bavarian Department of Justice, in August 1994 Professor Markwardt was appointed head of the Criminal Law und Clemency Department in the Bavarian Department of Justice and in November 1994 he was appointed to the position of Assistant Secretary. He has been retired since October 2009.
Professor Markwardt held lectures at the German Judicial Academy (1997 – 2009) and has had a teaching assignment in the Department of Forest Science und Resource Management at TUM since 1997.
