Professor Buras (b. 1946) conducts research on applied quantum field theory with the objective of constructing a flavor theory (different types of quarks and leptons). In this connection, he studies various extensions to the standard model of elementary particle physics, with a focus on the flavor-changing decay of mesons and violation of CP symmetry.
After studying physics at Warsaw University, he received a doctorate at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen (1972). After a three-year term at the Niels Bohr Institute, a two-year term as a fellow at CERN in Geneva and a five-year period at Fermilab in Chicago, where he was appointed to a permanent position in 1981, he moved to the Max Planck Institute for Physics (Munich) in 1982. He has been a full professor in the physics department of TUM since 1988. He is one of the most cited elementary particle theoreticians in Europe (SPIRES), with 250 scientific publications and Hirsch indices (2016) of 95 (SPIRES) and 69 (ISI).
