Prof. Dr. Lars Maegdefessel
Academic Career and Research Areas
Lars Mägdefessel (b. 1977) is interested in the contribution of non-coding RNAs to vascular disease development and progression. Within vascular pathologies, his research team focuses on atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability and expanding aortic aneurysms, utilizing a variety of translational approaches to discover novel treatment and detection methods on a molecular basis.
Mägdefessel studied Medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. After receiving his doctorate and completing a clinical fellowship in cardiology, he joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University, USA. After spending 3 years as a postdoctoral researcher in Stanford, he accepted an appointment as Assistant Professor of Molecular Vascular Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. In spring 2016 he was appointed Professor of Vascular Biology at TUM where he leads a research group sponsored by the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK).
