Prof. Dr. Winfried Petry
Academic Career and Research Areas
Professor Petry (b. 1951) investigates the functional properties of materials such as proteins, polymers, viscous liquids and shape-memory alloys by means of light-, X-ray and neutron-scattering. He designed the instrumentation of the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) and is head of the working group for developing high-density uranium fuels.
After studying physics at TUM, Professor Petry was awarded his PhD at the Hahn-Meitner Institute of the Free University (FU) of Berlin in 1981. From 1982 he worked as a research scientist at the Laue-Langevin Institute (Grenoble, France) for 10 years. He acquired his postdoctoral teaching qualification (habilitation) at LMU Munich in 1992. In the same year he was appointed professor at the Physics Department of TUM, where he served as a dean from 1996 - 1998. Since 1995 he has contributed to the development of the FRM II, where he has been Scientific Director since 2001. Since 2011 he has been Director at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum for neutron research, a scientific cooperation between the Helmholtz centres of Jülich and Geesthacht and the Technical University of Munich.
He is a scientific advisor to DFG and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, liaison professor to the Bavarian Elite Academy and member of the supervisory boards of several research institutes.
- Bundesverdienstkreuz der Bundesrepublik Deutschland am Bande (2008)
- Honorary professorship of the Chinese Atomic Energy Agency (CIAE) (2006)
