Academic Career and Research Areas
The Chair and testing department headed by Prof. Vogt (b. 1953) is known as Zentrum Geotechnik. It is one of Germany’s largest geotechnical institutes, renowned for advancements and innovations in research, teaching and practical construction projects. Areas of interest include foundation soil/building interaction, earthwork with heavy ground and building materials, geohydraulics and mechanics of unsaturated ground, the addition of sealing, supporting and strengthening materials to the pore space of soil, geosynthetics, deformation in inner city tunnel construction, micropiles and the behavior of very soft soils.
Prof. Vogt studied civil engineering in Braunschweig and Stuttgart and did his doctorate in Stuttgart under Hans-Ulrich Smoltczyk. After that, Prof. Vogt and partners set up an internationally renowned firm of consulting engineers. He has worked on a wide range of challenging geotechnics projects around the world. Examples include a large power plant in Libya, bridge construction in India, Pakistan and South America, new construction at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, new stretches of rail for Deutsche Bahn, Stuttgart 21 and the Engelberg tunnel near Stuttgart. He is committed to safe, sustainable and cost-efficient construction and the protection of groundwater as well as compliance with German and European standards. He has been a full professor at TUM since 2001.
