Academic Career and Research Areas

Professor Ziegler (b. 1958) researches into the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes and develops adjuvant treatment strategies for the prevention and treatment of type 1 diabetes. She is particularly interested in identifying the mechanisms involved in the development and progression of the disease, researching the gene-environment interactions that promote or prevent the development of diabetes, determining diagnostic markers for early detection and developing intervention strategies. She also conducts research in the field of gestational diabetes.

Professor Ziegler studied medicine at LMU where she completed her PhD in 1986. Supported by a grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG), she then worked as a post doctoral fellow at the Department for Immunology, Joslin Diabetes Center, at Harvard University in Boston, USA. In 1992 she acquired her postdoctoral teaching qualification (habilitation) at LMU. She is an adjunct professor at LMU and has worked at TUM since 2007. She is also Director of the Institute for Diabetes Research, Helmholtz Zentrum Munich, Director of the Research Group for Diabetes at TUM, Chairperson of the Forschergruppe Diabetes e.V. and spokesperson of the Competence Network Diabetes mellitus (BMBF).
