Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die digitale Transformation von Unternehmen, Geschäftsmodellinnovationen, die Auswirkungen digitaler Technologien auf Wirtschaft und Organisationen sowie die Zukunft von Führung und Arbeits-/Organisationsgestaltung.

Sie studierte Management an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München und am Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, USA. Darüber hinaus absolvierte sie einen MSc an der London School of Economics. Sie ist ein research fellow am University College London.Isabell Welpe lehrt Strategie und Geschäftsmodellinnovation, Digitale Transformation, Leadership, Organisationsdesign und Managing People and Organizations. Über ihre Forschung wird in den Medien berichtet, z. B. im Harvard Business Manager und im MIT Sloan Management Review.
