Academic Career and Research Areas
Professor Seidel studied technical biology at the University of Stuttgart from 1994 to 1999, earned his doctorate in physical chemistry at the University of Tübingen under Prof. G. Gauglitz in 2003, and completed his habilitation in analytical chemistry at TUM under Prof. R. Nießner in 2014. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Miltenyi Biotech GmbH, he joined TUM in 2005 as a group leader and academic advisor and was appointed senior academic advisor at the Chair of Analytical Chemistry and Water Chemistry at TUM in 2012. He heads the Bioanalytics and Microanalytical Systems working group and was appointed adjunct professor in 2025.
He conducts research in the field of quantitative bioanalytical chemistry, which is dedicated to the development of advanced analytical platforms—such as biosensors, ELISAs, microarrays, and lateral flow assays—for the rapid and precise quantification of bioorganic analytes. These include pharmaceuticals, toxins, and pathogens detected by antibody-based recognition or molecular biological techniques. Prof. Seidel's research group's vision is to push the boundaries of bioanalytical innovation by identifying and implementing novel applications in water quality monitoring, food safety analysis, and clinical diagnostics. By integrating state-of-the-art detection technologies with robust quantification strategies, he aims to contribute to global health, environmental sustainability, and consumer protection with faster, easier-to-use, and highly sensitive analytical solutions.
