Academic Career and Research Areas

Professor Back (b. 1966) works in the field of condensed matter physics. His research activity encompasses the high-quality fabrication of hybrid magnetic layered systems and the investigation of their dynamic magnetic properties on picosecond time scales. Nanostructured magnetic elements are investigated using magnetic microscopy methods with high temporal and spatial resolution. The spectrum is broadened by static and dynamic magneto-transport methods.

Professor Back studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and at RWTH Aachen. He completed his doctoral research at ETH Zurich from 1992 to 1995. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher, first at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (1995-1996) and then at IBM San Jose (1996-1997). From 1998 to 2001 he held a position as research assistant at ETH Zurich. In 2001 he accepted the offer of a position as Full Professor of experimental physics at the University of Regensburg. In 2017 he was appointed Full Professor of experimental physics at the Technical University of Munich, where he specializes in the field of functional spin systems. Professor Back was a member of the board of the German Research Foundation’s (DFG) collaborative research centers (SFBs) 689 and 1277. From 2011 to 2017 he acted as spokesman for the DFG Priority Program 1538 “Spincat”.
