Dr. Anna Antonova
Academic Career and Research Areas
Dr. Antonova holds a bachelor's degree from Williams College and a master's degree in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island. She earned her PhD from the University of Leeds as part of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie doctoral training network, with a thesis comparing the social and environmental transformations on the Yorkshire North Sea and the Bulgarian Black Sea coasts.
She subsequently served as director of environmental humanities development at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society at LMU Munich and as Co-I for the 2022-2025 Horizon Europe project EmpowerUs before joining TUM as the PI of the Volkswagen Foundation Change! project "Convivial Waterfronts" in 2026.
Dr. Antonova's research investigates the links between societal transformations and environmental governance, especially on the coast. Her thematic interests include transitions in coastal communities and the blue economy, EU environmental/marine policy and integration, as well as critical perspectives on social and environmental justice. Overall, Dr. Antonova's work is comparative, inter-, and transdisciplinary, drawing on methodological approaches spanning in-depth interviews, policy and narrative analysis, (urban) living labs, and knowledge co-production.
