Innate Immunomodulation

Academic Career and Research Areas

Julia Esser-von Bieren (*1983) studied biochemistry at the TUM (2003-2006) and holds a PhD in Medical Sciences from the Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden) (2006-2011). After a postdoc period at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) (2011-2014) she joined the Center of Allergy & Environment (ZAUM) as a junior group leader in 2015. Since 2018, Julia Esser-von Bieren is leading the Helmholtz Young Investigator group “Innate Immunomodulation“.

Julia Esser-von Bieren performs research in the area of molecular medicine. Her group studies innate effector mechanisms of allergy, asthma and helminth infection. She is particularly interested in the roles of lipid mediators in type 2 immune responses to allergens and worm parasites. As major producers of lipid mediators, the group focuses on macrophages and granulocytes. Ultimately, Julia Esser-von Bieren’s research is aimed at contributing to new therapeutic strategies for chronic airway inflammation.
