Academic Career and Research Areas
PD Dr. Karampinos (b. 1980) conducts research in the area of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). His research focuses on the development of novel MRI acquisition and image reconstruction methods with an emphasis on the extraction of quantitative imaging biomarkers. The developed methods are being translated into clinical studies for improving the diagnosis, the therapy monitoring, and the understanding of disease pathophysiology in musculoskeletal (e.g. osteoporosis) and metabolic (e.g. obesity, diabetes) diseases.
PD Dr. Karampinos studied mechanical engineering at National Technical University of Athens, Greece. He then moved to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he obtained his PhD in 2008. Between 2009 and 2012, he was a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco. In 2012, he joined the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology of TUM, where he is currently leading the Body Magnetic Resonance Research Group.
