Academic Career and Research Areas

Dr. Matthias Meier focuses in his research on the integration and analysis of human organoid systems on microfluidic chip technologies. By generating micrometer-sized stem cell-derived pancreatic and fatty tissues on the chip, he investigates the development and progression of metabolic diseases, in particular diabetes and cancer. For the analysis of organoids from human stem cells, Dr. Meier's research group couples chip platforms to single-cell sequencing and imaging technologies to resolve transcriptome and protein data. By combining the Omics data, he hopes to uncover risk factors for diabetes, but also early biomarkers for pancreatic cancer.

Matthias Meier received his PhD from the University of Basel in Switzerland in 2006. In 2008 he received the Feodor Lynen Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and worked for 4 years with Steven Quake at Stanford University. As Emmy-Noether junior research group leader he returned to Europe and founded an independent research group at the Institute of Microsystems Technology at the University of Freiburg. In 2017 Dr. Meier received an ERC Consolidator Grant for a medical technology project in the field of organ-on-chips. In 2018 Matthias Meier joined the Helmholtz Pioneer Campus.
