Academic Career and Research Areas

After studying physics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Hannes Pfeifer pursued his graduate work at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light and the California Institute of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Oskar Painter. He subsequently continued as a Postdoc at the University of Bonn with Prof. Dieter Meschede and Prof. Sebastian Hofferberth, where he started to coordinate the Bonn Fiber Lab facility and lead his own research projects. He continued his research at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg in the group of Prof. Witlef Wieczorek as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow before moving to the Technical University of Munich in the beginning of 2026. 

The focus of his research group lies in applications of optical micro-resonators, in particular in using the radiation pressure inside these resonators to control the mechanical properties of compliant micro-structures and artificial mechanical metamaterials. The goal of the Emmy Noether project is to explore this light-vibration interface to create a platform where vibration can be switched and steered by light and collective mechanical properties be dynamically modified.
