Laufbahn

Prof. Rheinboldt studierte von 1947 bis 1952 Physik und Mathematik an der Universität Heidelberg. Nach einer einjährigen Tätigkeit in einem Flugzeuglabor in Duisburg nahm er sein Studium an der Universität Freiburg wieder auf und promovierte 1955 zum Dr. rer. nat. im Bereich angewandte Mathematik. Anschließend ging er als Post-Doctoral-Fellow an die Universität Maryland. Im Anschluss daran arbeitete er im Computation Laboratory des US National Bureau of Standards (NBS). Seine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn setzte er 1959 an der Syracuse University fort. 1963 erhielt er einen Ruf als Professor für Mathematik an die Universität Maryland, wo er ein Informatikzentrum errichtete, das er bis 1965 leitete. An dieser Universität blieb er als Professor für Mathematik und Informatik bis 1978, als er einem Ruf an den Andrew W. Mellon Lehrstuhl für Mathematik an der Universität Pittsburgh folgte.
1998 wurde er emeritiert. Während seiner gesamten wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn erhielt Prof. Rheinboldt Unterstützung für seine Forschung (z.B. National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research und National Air and Space Administration).
