Wissenschaftliche Laufbahn und Forschungsgebiete

Prof. Theocharis (*1982) Forschungsbereich umfasst politisches Verhalten mit Fokus auf den Einfluss digitaler Medien auf politische Partizipation, Kommunikation, Governance und unzivilisiertes Verhalten in der Onlinewelt. Seine Arbeit nutzt Umfragedaten, experimentale und computergestützte Methoden um zu verstehen, wie soziale Medien die politische Informationsumgebung verändern, Nutzer ermächtigen, indem neue Formen der politische Partizipation ermöglicht werden, aber auch die Öffentlichkeit demobilisieren, polarisieren und marginalisieren. 

Prof. Theocharis hat an der Universität Kreta Soziologie und New Media an der London School of Economics (LSE) studiert. Anschließend hat er in Politikwissenschaft am University College London (UCL) promoviert. Vor seine Berufung als Professor für Digital Governance an der TUM (2020) war er Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow und Research Fellow am Mannheimer Zentrum für Europäische Sozialforschung, Assistant Professor an der Universität Groningen und Professor für Kommunikation und Medien an der Universität Bremen.
