Academic Career and Research Areas
Professor Eckstein (b. 1955) is interested in unstable arteriosclerotic plaque stenoses of the carotid artery as well as the genesis and risk of rupture of aneurysms of the aorta.
After studying medicine at Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg, he completed his PhD (1986) and acquired his postdoctoral teaching qualification (1998) in Heidelberg. From 1999 to 2003 Professor Eckstein was medical director of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery at the Klinikum Ludwigsburg. In 2004 he succeeded Professor P.C. Maurer at Klinikum rechts der Isar as director of the Department for Vascular Surgery. In 2008 Professor Eckstein declined a W3 professorship for vascular surgery at Heidelberg University and was appointed the first holder of the newly created Chair for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at TUM in 2009. Professor Eckstein was president of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG) in 2009/2010 and since 2006 has been the editorial managing director of the journal "GEFÄSSCHIRURGIE" (Vascular Surgery).
