Prof. Dr. Ewald A. Werner

Academic Career and Research Areas

Professor Werner conducts research in the area of metal materials, with the goal of understanding and modeling the mechanisms that underlie material properties, in order to improve the performance of materials by modifying their microstructure. His focus is on iron, nickel, titanium, and aluminum alloys for highly loaded applications in energy conversion and transportation.

After studying materials science at the Mining University in Leoben, Austria, he received his doctorate (1984) and became a professor (1991) in Leoben.  Following postdoctoral research work at ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich (1984 – 1986) he conducted research at the Institute for Solid Body Physics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Prior to his appointment at TUM (1997) he was an assistant professor (1991) and associate professor (1996) at the University of Leoben, Austria. At TUM he heads the Materials Science and Mechanics Department and the National Materials Testing Institute for Mechanical Engineering. From 1998 to 2005 he headed the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Modern Multiphase Steels. Werner is coauthor of five textbooks on mechanics, materials science, and materials engineering.
