Career

Following an internship in the turbine engineering department at Escher Wyss A.G., Zurich, Switzerland, in 1956 Professor Martin started studying mechanical engineering at the Technical University in Karlsruhe, Germany. After completing his studies he worked in the field of steam turbine engineering and power plants from 1960 to 2001, initially at MAN in Nuremberg, later at Alstom. As of 1964 Professor Martin headed the department responsible for automatic control and as of 1987 the power plant planning department. In 1967 he received his doctorate from the Technical University in Karlsruhe for his work on non-contact diaphragm glands. From 1977 to 2006 he had a teaching assignment in the Department of Energy Systems at TUM where he lectured on the control systems of power plants operating in a network. Professor Martin is the author of numerous publications, including several books.
