Academic Career and Research Areas
Prof. Schömig (b. 1946) carries out research in the area of interventional treatment of atherosclerosis, including coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis of the arteries supplying the brain and peripheral arterial disease, along with clinical research into innovative anti-platelet strategies. His areas of basic research cover vascular biology, including thrombosis and atherosclerosis and stem cell biology, including inducible pluripotent stem cells.
After studying medicine in Würzburg, he obtained his doctorate (1972) and completed his postdoctoral studies (1985) in Heidelberg. In 1987, he was appointed university professor and joined the Faculty of Clinical Medicine I of Heidelberg University. In 1992, he was appointed to the Chair of Internal Medicine and became Director of the 1st Medical Clinic of TUM. In 1995, he also became Director of the Cardiovascular Disease Clinic at the German Heart Center Munich.
