Career

Professor Spiekers (b. 1959) orginally comes from Heiden in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and now lives in Erding near Munich. After completing his high school education and military service, he studied agricultural science at the University of Bonn, majoring in animal production. This was followed by work experience placements in North Rhine-Westphalia, New Zealand and Canada. In 1988 Professor Spiekers received a doctorate for his work on “protected methionine for dairy cows” supervised by Professor Pfeffer at the Institute of Animal Nutrition at the University of Bonn. In 1989 he completed a post graduate trainee program and passed the state examination leading to top civil service positions in the field of agriculture. Afterwards he returned to the Institute of Animal Nutrition at the University of Bonn where he worked as a research assistant under Professor Pfeffer. Between 1992 and 2003 Professor Spiekers worked as a senior executive specializing in feed, feeding and feed preservation at the Rheinland chamber of agriculture in Bonn where he was responsible for providing professional advice and conducting trials in the areas of feed preservation, feed evaluation and cattle feeding. Since December 2003 he has been at the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture (LfL) where he is head of the Institute of Animal Nutrition and Forage Management in Grub. The main focus of his work is the efficient use of resources and sustainable feeding systems.

    • Member of the board of the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture (LfL) (2013-2018)
    • Head of the Institute of Animal Nutrition and Forage Management of the LfL in Grub (since 2003) 
    • Chairman of the animal feed and feeding working group of DLG (German Agricultural Society, Frankfurt) (since 2004)
    • Member of the DLG committee on silage additives (since 1998)  
    • Senior executive specializing in feed, feeding and feed preservation at the Rheinland chamber of agriculture in Bonn (1992-2003)
