Academic Career and Research Areas

Professor Paal's (*1974) research focuses on the social challenges and implications of digital transformation with a focus on the digital and data economy. Professor Paal examines governance and legal frameworks for future technologies such as artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision-making systems, quantum computing and immersive realities in order to develop fundamental rights compliant, human-centered, value-based and marketable solutions using an interdisciplinary approach.

Professor Paal studied law in Tübingen, Constance (Dr. jur.) and Oxford (M.Jur.). After legal clerkship in Düsseldorf, he completed his habilitation in Heidelberg. From 2009-21 he was full professor of civil and commercial law, media and information law at the University of Freiburg, from 2021-23 full professor of civil and information law, media and data law at the University of Leipzig, from 2020-23 judge at the Regional Court of Hamburg. In October 2023, he was appointed Professor of Law and Regulation of the Digital Transformation at TUM.
