Academic Career and Research Areas
Moritz von Scheidt is a clinician scientist and cardiologist at the German Heart Center Munich of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), where he conducts research under the mentorship of Prof. Heribert Schunkert. After early work in transplant immunology, he focused on atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. As a research fellow at UCLA under Prof. Jake Lusis, he investigated molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis in murine and human models. He joined the DZHK Clinician Scientist Program in 2018 and became a board-certified cardiologist in 2023. In 2024, he completed his habilitation on translational strategies in atherosclerosis. Since 2022, he leads an independent junior research group on somatic mutations in cardiovascular disease, funded by the CORONA Foundation.
Moritz von Scheidt investigates genetic and molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis, focusing on key driver genes, disease-relevant networks, and functional translation. His publications in Cell Metabolism, Circulation, and the European Heart Journal reflect his integrative approach bridging genetics, functional biology, and clinical cardiology. He utilizes deeply phenotyped cohorts, omics datasets, and AI-driven analyses. He is deputy lead of the DigiMed Bayern project (>€25 million), head of the clinical biobank of the cardiology department, and founder and director of the postmortem MISSION biobank with access to human cardiovascular tissues. He also co-founded and chairs the German CHIP Registry e.V., which investigates clonal hematopoiesis in cardiovascular disease. His research aims to identify cardiovascular mechanisms, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets.
