Academic Career and Research Areas
Dr. Christian Wurzbacher studied Biology at the University of Kassel in Germany (Diplom), and Aquatic Microbiology at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Berlin (Leibniz-IGB) where he obtained his doctoral degree at the University of Potsdam (Dr. rer. nat.). After his first post-doctoral position at the Berlin Center for Genomics in Biodiversity Research/Leibniz-IGB, he worked in his second research position at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Since 2018, he is leading the research group Microbial Systems at the Chair of Urban Water Systems Engineering at the TUM in Germany.
Dr. Christian Wurzbacher conducts research in the area of aquatic microbial ecology. He takes an integrated approach to investigate the diversity of unknown microbial interactions by combining field surveys, experiments, model communities, and culture-independent, high-throughput sequencing. He is currently focusing on unknown microscopic fungi in biofilms and is establishing a new platform for high throughput descriptions of microbial eukaryotes.
